Bob Brandes. Ten bottle cherry vintner's cabinet for Bell Wine Cellars/Napa Valley Wine Auction.
Bob Brandes started woodworking back in the 80's when, in an act of generosity, his future ex wife got the house and all the furniture. His first piece was a black leather love seat made from the back seat of a Cadillac Eldorado. Wanting a tasteful suite he added an electric recliner made from the drivers seat. He retired from Cadillac and the collision repair business in 1989, no more car seats.
After nearly 20 years of closet wood working, Bob started as a 53 year old apprentice at Aux Provencaux, makers of French provincial furniture in San Francisco. When the property was sold the owner decided to retire rather than relocate. Fortunately McGuire Furniture was right across the street. Fortunate because the odds of getting lost on the way to the new job were greatly reduced. The ripples from the crash of 2008 reached Bob's job in 2009 and he was freed to be a starving wood worker all the time. For full retelling of heroic stories you can visit Bob at the Rosebowl Florist and Wine Bar almost any night of the week, except when he is at his Santa Cruz Mountains woodworking shop of course.
